I joined the group Deported to Mexico. I have a soul connection to Mexico now. I love the culture, the people.
I saw that Mexico was in danger from some of what was being sent back over the border — Mexicans who had adopted bad American habits. So I wrote this warning to the group. It was very well recieved:
The conservative cynicism that has brought about the downfall of the United States was deliberately seeded throughout our culture by wealthy and powerful interests. It is a poison, using bigotry and suspicion to turn neighbor against neighbor, brother against brother. It confuses the mind with fear, lies and disinformation. It is designed to make democracy impossible.
Please be sure not to take this with you back to Mexico.
Cynicism becomes a habit, a way of thinking, a way of living even. It can turn people, even an entire society, sociopathic. You are seeing that happen in real time in the United States. Worse, you have felt those wicked hands upon you.
Mexico, as I have experienced it, is a happy and joyous country, welcoming to the stranger, even the gringo Americano, even now, after all that has happened. The people are kind and respectful of one another, and work together for the common good.
Protect that. Protect Mexico from the darkness that is tearing my country apart.
I do not know Mexico the way many of you do. Perhaps I speak out of turn.
But I know this darkness, this evil, very well. It threatens not just the United states, not just Mexico, but the entirety of the world.
Nurture love and beauty and brotherhood in Mexico, however you can.
Whatever else you take with you, please, leave that darkness behind.
For your sake.
